Holtz, a single-digit handicapper and member at Augusta National, won the club's member-member tournament in 2005, which he called his greatest accomplishment. He hosted the SiriusXM radio show 'Holtz in One' and developed friendships with several players, including Lee Trevino.
When first hired as an assistant football coach at William & Mary in 1962, the school made him golf coach to boost his salary by $300, though Holtz admitted he didn't even know how to keep score. Golf became his guilty pleasure, and he cherished a story about being on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1986, only to be replaced when Jack Nicklaus won his sixth Masters that week.
