The Lions sent 29‑year‑old back David Montgomery to the Texans in exchange for a draft pick, freeing roughly $3.5 million in cap room. Montgomery, who earned $6 million in the first year of a two‑year extension, had a reduced role behind Jahmyr Gibbs last season.
General manager Brad Holmes said he would have liked to keep Montgomery, but the player’s desire to move on made the deal inevitable. Detroit will look to free‑agency options such as Brian Robinson, Najee Harris, Michael Carter or Emari Demercado to fill the void.
