The Toronto Blue Jays pitching logjam just got a little more crowded.
Veteran starter Max Scherzer said he will “be ready” for Opening Day despite a late arrival to spring training on Tuesday in Dunedin, Fla.
“I feel healthy, I feel good, I just wanna pitch,” Scherzer said, adding he threw 45 pitches over two innings in his last mound session.
Scherzer is among seven pitchers in the mix for the opening-day rotation, along with Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, José Berríos, Trey Yesavage and Eric Lauer.
Shane Bieber, meanwhile, is slated to start the season in the injured list.
Scherzer officially re-signed with the Blue Jays Monday on a one-year, $3-million deal that includes up to $10 million in incentives.
He appeared in 17 regular-season games for the team last year, posting a 5-5 record and 5.19 ERA. In the post-season, the 41-year-old started three games — including 4.1 innings in Game 7 of the World Series — with a 3.77 ERA.
Scherzer said the team’s capacity to win and clubhouse culture helped draw him back.
“It’s the guys in the clubhouse. The way we gelled last year, that’s a special thing when that happens. It’s rare when you get everybody on the same page playing the same brand of baseball at the same time, and we have that. And it’s something I don’t take for granted,” he said.
“When we left the season last year, all we wanted to do was play more baseball.”
Scherzer also said he’s no longer dealing with the thumb injury that bothered him throughout last season, though he did not dive into details.
“I’m past that,” he said.

Titans are the betting favorites to draft Jeremiyah Love
No running back has been a Top 5 pick in the NFL draft since Saquon Barkley in 2018. Notre Dame's Jeremiyah Love may change that this year.
The Titans, who own the fourth overall pick, are currently the betting favorites to take Love, with their odds of drafting him at +200. That would be a major investment in a running back who, the Titans would hope, can join with 2025 first overall pick Cam Ward as two building blocks of their offense for years to come.
The six-foot, 214-pound Love ran a 4.36-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine, solidifying his status as the top running back in this year's draft. Love had 199 carries for 1,372 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns last year at Notre Dame and is one of the best running backs to come out of college football in years.
The Commanders, who own the seventh overall pick, have the next- best odds to draft Love, at +275. The Chiefs (No. 9 pick) are listed at +350 and the Saints (No. 8 pick) are at +370.
