Minnesota Twins' 3 Spring Training Standouts So Far

The Minnesota Twins hardly have a star-studded roster outside of outfielder Byron Buxton, starting pitcher Joe Ryan, and starting pitcher Pablo Lopez, but they have lesser-known players making the most of their spring training reps. Here are three examples:

CF Emmanuel Rodriguez

Rodriguez, who has yet to make his big-league regular-season debut, is 6-for-13 with two homers and four RBIs over six games thus far. The 5-foot-11, 210-pounder has been in the minors since 2021 and was called up to Triple-A in both 2024 and 2025. He has a .254/.424/.488 slash line with 50 homers, 161 RBIs, and 59 stolen bases over 295 career minor-league games.

It won't be easy for Rodriguez to get MLB playing time this season either, as the Twins have Buxton, James Outman, and Austin Martin on the center field depth chart. Outman has 267 career big-league games, and Martin logged a .740 OPS in 50 contests last year. But Rodriguez could outperform Ryan Kriedler, who owns just a .138/.208/.176 slash line over 89 career games.

LF Alan Roden

Unlike Rodriguez, Roden has big-league experience, but he hasn't performed well in the regular season thus far. The 26-year-old is slashing .191/.261/.294 over 55 career games, but it's been a different story this spring. Thus far, he's 7-for-14 with one homer and five RBIs over five games.

Roden will likely go into the season backing up Martin in left, but that arrangement could change if he keeps performing this way. Minnesota acquired the 2022 third-round pick from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline last season, and it would make the front office look good if he turns into a long-term contributor. He had season-ending thumb surgery in August, so he barely had time to establish himself with the Twins last year. Now, he's showing why the organization wanted him in the first place.

SP Mick Abel

Abel's first taste of the big leagues didn't look good on the stat sheet last season, as he logged a 6.23 ERA over 10 appearances (eight starts). But the 24-year-old couldn't have gotten off to a better start this spring, as he's tossed six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts, no walks, and three hits allowed.

The Philadelphia Phillies drafted Abel No. 15 overall in 2020, and they dealt him to the Twins at last season's deadline. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder has yet to live up to his draft status, but he'll earn himself more innings in the regular season if he keeps shutting down opposing lineups this spring.
