Nielsen Quits as Japan Coach After Asian Cup Triumph

Nils Nielsen has resigned as Japan women's coach less than two weeks after guiding the team to their third Women's Asian Cup title.

Nils Nielsen is leaving as Japan women's coach following the expiry of his contract, the Japanese Football Association confirmed. The 54-year-old Greenlander led Japan to victory over Australia 1-0 in the Asian Cup final on March 21, despite having been in the role since December 2024.

Japan impressed during the tournament, scoring 29 goals while conceding just one. Nielsen described his team as 'inspirational' and praised their quality. The former Denmark and Switzerland coach previously served as technical director at Manchester City's women's side.
