Oviedo’s Velocity Drops 2.5 mph, Red Sox Confident He’s Healthy

Johan Oviedo’s fastball velocity dropped 2.5 mph in his first regular‑season start, but Red Sox manager Alex Cora says the pitcher is healthy and ready to pitch.

In his first regular‑season outing, Oviedo gave up four runs, six hits (including two homers) and struck out three over 3 2/3 innings. His 25 four‑seam fastballs averaged 93.0 mph, 2.5 mph slower than the 95.5 mph average he posted last season with the Pirates.

Despite a 2024 season missed for Tommy John surgery and a 2025 lat strain, manager Alex Cora said the Red Sox are confident Oviedo is healthy. He has been used as a long reliever and has one minor‑league option remaining.
