Despite Hasan Nawaz’s valiant 51-ball 96, Pakistan slipped to a 19-run loss in the Asian Games final. Meanwhile, India’s defence of the Asian Game Gold Medal was based on Tilak Varma’s 22-ball 51, Abhishek Sharma’s whirlwind knock and Shivam Dube’s all-round contribution.
Sanju Samson, one of the key members of the Indian set-up, opened up on winning the Gold Medal, and how it turned out to be a hard-earned victory. “When we scored 200, we thought it would be a bit tough to chase. But the wicket was very good for batting, they also batted well,” he said to the reporters in the Mixed Zone.
“It wasn’t like we won easily, we had to work hard. It is a big occasion, big opportunity to represent our country in an Asian Games final. But once the match starts, it is about playing according to the match conditions and match situation. ”

The Indian wicket-keeper also shared his thoughts on how the experience in the Indian camp proved to be a decisive factor. “It was a very different experience to be very honest (to play in a tournament comprising different sporting disciplines).
“But we have a very experienced team, we knew how to manage our energy, how to be positive, how to motivate ourselves even after practice isn’t happening, matches aren’t happening (due to weather conditions). That is where bringing the best team helped.”
So, with the mega event consisting different sporting disciplines, did the cricketers get the opportunity to interact with other Indian athletes? Samson noted, “We got to interact with PT Usha ma’am, it was inspiring to see her, we really enjoyed that moment.”
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, meanwhile, kept his answer short. “I felt good, it was nice, all of us enjoyed. Everyone thought it was a good game of cricket. I just played it like a normal match.”
