India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has brought the curtain down on his first-class career, announcing his retirement from red-ball cricket. Chahal announced his decision on Friday, October 2, via a social media post, while keeping his dream of making a comeback to India’s white-ball set-up alive.
Chahal looked back on his red-ball career in the note he shared on social media.

“The first cricket ball I ever held was a red ball. I was 10 years old, and I had no idea then how deeply I would fall in love with this game,” Chahal wrote in a note shared on social media. “For me, red-ball cricket was never just another format. It was where I learned the meaning of patience, character, resilience, and the pure joy of being out there for hours, fighting for every run and every wicket.”

Along with this, Chahal made it clear that he intends to continue pursuing a return to India’s white-ball sides.

“But I AM NOT DONE YET. The hunger to play for my country is still very much alive,” he said. “I believe I have the cricket left in me, and I will give everything I have to earn another opportunity in the One-Day and T20 formats.”

Furthermore, he also credited the Haryana Cricket Association for its continuous support, trust and belief.

Despite Chahal’s success in the shorter formats, he never made his Test debut for India, and the prospect of playing Test cricket remained a dream.

“I played my last First-Class match at Lord’s,” Chahal said. “Saying these words is emotional, as a Test cap was always a dream, one that I carried with me for many years. It may not have happened, but I am genuinely content with the journey I have had and incredibly grateful for every opportunity that came my way in this format.”

Chahal will continue to play white-ball cricket. This decision, therefore, marks the closing of one chapter rather than the end of his playing career. The leg-spinner spoke about his memories in red-ball cricket, saying, “The red ball gave me some of the most beautiful memories of my life, and nothing will ever take that away.”

The out-of-favour Indian cricketer ended his note by stating, “From a 10-year-old holding his first red ball to playing his final First-Class game, it has been one hell of a journey.”
