Sri Lanka’s head coach Gary Kirsten is well versed with the finer nuances of Indian cricket, having spent three years with the team and having guided MS Dhoni’s side to the 2011 ODI World Cup title, yet the South African is reluctant to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Shubman Gill-led visitors who will take on the Lankans in a two-Test series, starting in Galle on Saturday.

“I’m not here to judge the Indian team. We’re just trying to focus on our strengths, what we can do well in the Test match, make sure we prepare well and understand what we want to do. Let the game unfold; the conditions will determine the way we set up our strategies and also the situation in the game. We back our skills to be able to take advantage of that momentum,” Kirsten told mid-day during a virtual interaction with select media, organised by Sony Sports Network on Thursday.

Gill’s India and the Dhananjaya de Silva-led Sri Lanka, who are ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, will play the second Test in Colombo from August 23.

Kirsten, who took charge of the Sri Lankan team last April, made his plans clear: “There is a lot that needs to be done, but in the end, I’d like to help this [Sri Lanka] team become a top-four nation, and compete with the best cricket teams in the world.”

Kirsten admitted that India will be a tough team to tackle. “They [India] are a very successful team with a lot of depth. We’re aware of that in our preparations and how we want to play against this team. India is a quality team and we need to make sure that we’re up to the task in the execution of our skills and also in our strategy of how we’re going to play against them,” added Kirsten, 58, a veteran of 101 Tests and 185 ODIs.

The coach stressed on the significance of playing it session by session. “Games can be won and lost in one session. And in a two-match series, the series can be lost in one session. So, you’ve got to concentrate all the way through. You can’t lapse too much, because it could be series-defining. We’re aware that we need to be doing well at home. And we need to have success in terms of that long-term play of the WTC. And as we build that up, it allows us to know that we can play different ways and win games,” Kirsten explained.

Pacer Hasan Mahmud took a career-best 6-55 as Bangladesh bundled Australia out for 198 to take the honours on Day One of the first Test here on Thursday. At stumps, Bangladesh were 96-1.

Earlier, Hasan led an impressive display by the visitors’ seamers as Australia slumped to their lowest Test score against Bangladesh.

Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 14 (ANI): Captain Denish Das led from the front with a half-century as Barpeta Braves chased down Guwahati Royals’ 137-run target to register a four-wicket victory in the Assam Premier League (APL) at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati on Thursday.

The win lifted Barpeta Braves to third place in the points table with eight points from seven matches, while Guwahati Royals slipped to second, also on 10 points, behind table-toppers Dibrugarh Warriors on net run rate, according to a release.

Put into bat, Guwahati Royals were given a steady start by Sanjay Kumar Singh and captain Rishav Das after Rohit Sen was dismissed early. Rishav anchored the innings with a composed 39 off 35 balls, while Nibir Deka contributed 33 off 34 deliveries. Jyoti Deka added 14 to take the Royals to 136/6 in their 20 overs.

Barpeta Braves’ bowlers kept the Royals under control by picking up wickets at regular intervals. Shubham Kumar Gupta was the pick of the attack with two wickets.

In reply, Barpeta Braves made a positive start through Saurav Mousum Dihingia, who struck 23 off 18 balls, including two fours and two sixes. After his dismissal, Pranjal Paul played a patient knock of 24 off 35 deliveries before Denish Das took charge of the chase.

The Barpeta skipper produced a captain’s innings, hitting 52 off 41 balls and striking five fours. His assured knock kept the chase on course through the middle overs, while Abhilash Maurya added a valuable 19 off 16 balls.

With the target within reach, Arun Sonar provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten seven off just two deliveries, including a six. Barpeta Braves reached 137/6 in 19.4 overs to complete a four-wicket victory and move into third place in the standings.

બાંગ્લાદેશ ક્રિકેટ બોર્ડ (BCB) ઈચ્છે છે કે ટીમ ઈન્ડિયા બાંગ્લાદેશ જઈને દ્વિપક્ષીય શ્રેણી રમે, પરંતુ ભારતીય ક્રિકેટ કંટ્રોલ બોર્ડ (BCCI) તરફથી હજુ સુધી આ પ્રવાસ અંગે કોઈ સત્તાવાર જાહેરાત કરવામાં આવી નથી. આ દરમિયાન BCCIએ અફઘાનિસ્તાન સામેની T20I શ્રેણીની જાહેરાત કરી છે, જેના કારણે ભારતના બાંગ્લાદેશ પ્રવાસની શક્યતાઓ ઓછી થઈ હોવાનું માનવામાં આવી રહ્યું છે.

બાંગ્લાદેશ પ્રવાસ હજુ રદ થયો નથી

જોકે, હવે BCCIના એક સૂત્રએ સ્પષ્ટ કર્યું છે કે બાંગ્લાદેશ પ્રવાસ હજુ રદ થયો નથી. અંતિમ નિર્ણય ભારત સરકારની મંજૂરી બાદ જ લેવામાં આવશે. BCCIના સૂત્રના જણાવ્યા અનુસાર, બાંગ્લાદેશ પ્રવાસને લઈને સરકારના નિર્ણયની રાહ જોવામાં આવી રહી છે. બોર્ડના અધિકારીઓ આ મુદ્દે હાઈ કમિશનર સાથે સતત સંપર્કમાં છે અને વાતચીત ચાલી રહી છે.

બાંગ્લાદેશ પ્રવાસ માટે સરકારની મંજૂરી જરૂરી

BCCIના સૂત્રએ જણાવ્યું કે બાંગ્લાદેશ પ્રવાસ માટે સરકારની મંજૂરી જરૂરી છે. બંને દેશોના ક્રિકેટ બોર્ડ વચ્ચે સંબંધો હજુ પણ સારા છે અને BCCI હાલમાં સરકાર તરફથી મળનારા સંકેતની રાહ જોઈ રહ્યું છે. જો સરકાર પ્રવાસને મંજૂરી આપે છે, તો ત્યારબાદ શ્રેણીની તારીખો નક્કી કરવામાં આવશે. હાલમાં આ શ્રેણી માટે કોઈ સમયગાળો નક્કી કરવામાં આવ્યો નથી.

BCBએ 6 મેચની શ્રેણીનો પ્રસ્તાવ આપ્યો

ભારત અને બાંગ્લાદેશ વચ્ચે મર્યાદિત ઓવરોની શ્રેણી યોજવાનો પ્રસ્તાવ બાંગ્લાદેશ ક્રિકેટ બોર્ડે BCCI સમક્ષ મૂક્યો છે. આ શ્રેણીમાં કુલ છ મેચ રમાવાની યોજના છે. તેમાં ત્રણ વનડે અને ત્રણ T20I મેચનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. અહેવાલો અનુસાર, BCBના અધ્યક્ષે પણ BCCI સાથે ભારતના પ્રવાસ અંગે ચર્ચા કરી હતી.

છેલ્લા કેટલાક સમયથી બંને દેશોના ક્રિકેટ સંબંધોમાં ઉતાર-ચઢાવ જોવા મળ્યો છે. ખાસ કરીને T20 વર્લ્ડ કપને લઈને બાંગ્લાદેશના નિર્ણય બાદ સ્થિતિ વધુ સંવેદનશીલ બની હતી. બાંગ્લાદેશે સુરક્ષાને કારણ દર્શાવીને વર્લ્ડ કપ માટે ભારત ન આવવાનો નિર્ણય લીધો હતો. તેણે પોતાના મેચો શ્રીલંકામાં રમાડવાની ઈચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી હતી, પરંતુ આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય ક્રિકેટ પરિષદ (ICC)એ તેની માંગ સ્વીકારી નહોતી. પરિણામે બાંગ્લાદેશ વર્લ્ડ કપમાં રમ્યું નહોતું.

આ ઘટનાના બાદ BCBએ ભારત સાથે ક્રિકેટ સંબંધો સુધારવાની ઈચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી છે. હવે બંને દેશો વચ્ચે દ્વિપક્ષીય ક્રિકેટ ફરી શરૂ થાય તેવી આશા છે. જોકે, ભારત સરકારની મંજૂરી મળ્યા બાદ જ આ અંગે અંતિમ નિર્ણય થઈ શકશે.

હાલમાં BCCI અને સરકાર વચ્ચે ચર્ચા ચાલી રહી છે. જો મંજૂરી મળે છે તો ત્રણ વનડે અને ત્રણ T20Iની શ્રેણી માટે નવી તારીખો નક્કી થઈ શકે છે. તેથી ભારતીય ટીમ બાંગ્લાદેશ જશે કે નહીં, તેના પર અંતિમ નિર્ણય માટે હજુ રાહ જોવી પડશે.
