IND vs SL: Dickwella Set to Return for Test Series as Injured Mendis, Nissanka Miss Out
Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the two-match series is yet to be revealed. The announcement is said to have been delayed as the selectors were waiting for fitness updates on key players Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, who have been carrying injuries. djcc.club
It is now all but confirmed that both players are out of the squad. It is understood that both players are currently unable to cope with the workload of Test cricket.
According to sources close to the team, Niroshan Dickwella, who has played 54 Tests, is set to be named in the squad. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter’s last Test appearance came in 2023. With Mendis, the team’s first-choice wicketkeeper, ruled out, the selectors have opted for Dickwella’s experience rather than the promise of 22-year-old batting sensation Anjala Bandara, who averages over 60 in first-class cricket.
Asitha Fernando is set to lead the pace-bowling attack, which is likely to feature Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando.
Prabath Jayasuriya will lead the spin-bowling unit.
Captain Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Udara will form the core of the batting line-up. In the absence of Nissanka, Nishan Madushka is set to retain his place as a top-order batter. The right-handed batter scored twin fifties against India in the three-day practice game.
The first Test begins in Galle on August 15.

Rashid’s all-round show earns Afghanistan direct 2027 WC spot
Belfast [Ireland], August 11 (ANI): An all-round effort from star spinner Rashid Khan helped Afghanistan seal an automatic spot in the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup with a three-wicket win over Ireland in the third ODI at Belfast.
With this win on Monday, Afghanistan is 2-0 up in the five-match series. The first match was abandoned without a ball bowled.
In the previous ODI World Cup in 2023, Afghanistan were promising, finishing sixth in the points table with four wins and five losses, narrowly short of contention for a semifinal spot. With wins over defending champions England and former champions Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, they still had a tournament to be proud of.
Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first. Half of the Irish side was back in the hut for 89 runs in the 22nd over.
Gavin Hoey (36 in 67 balls, with two fours) and Jai Moondra (31 in 33 balls, with five fours) put up 76-runs for the ninth wicket. Afghanistan skittled out Ireland for 206 runs in 46.3 overs.
Allah Ghazanfar (3/29) and Rashid (3/44) were exceptional with the ball for Afghanistan.
During the run-chase, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran (12) put on a 53-run opening stand.
Gurbaz kept one end steady, but he was the fifth wicket down for 71 in 77 balls, with two fours and five sixes at a score of 149. From there, Afghanistan sank to 176/7 in the 36th over and were in a tricky situation.
Rashid played a useful knock of 37* in 43 balls, with four boundaries, putting on a 31-run stand with Yamin Ahmadzai (4*) to take Afghanistan to a win in the 45th over with three wickets in hand.

Jemimah Rodrigues has already set her sights on another major title after being part of India’s historic Women’s ODI World Cup triumph in 2025.
The India batter is looking forward to the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, which will be played in the T20 format in Sri Lanka from February 14 to 28, 2027. The ICC had earlier kept the tournament in the June-July window before moving it to February.
While speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘Follow the Blues’, Jemimah mentioned: “We’ve tasted success once, and we know what it feels like to be at the top. The more you taste it, the more you want to be there. So, I think our team is working towards that, and yes, the Champions Trophy is going to be very special.”
Rodrigues played a key role in India’s 2025 ODI World Cup campaign, producing one of the standout knocks of the tournament. She smashed an unbeaten 127 against Australia in the semi-final before India went on to beat South Africa by 52 runs in the final in Navi Mumbai.
However, her immediate focus is now on recovering from a hamstring injury. Rodrigues has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Women’s Hundred after picking up the injury while playing for Southern Brave.
She had made a strong start to the competition, scoring 143 runs in six innings at an average of 35.75 and a strike rate of 131.19. Southern Brave have brought in Australia’s Charli Knott as her replacement.
The injury has also put Rodrigues’ participation in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup under a cloud. The tournament begins on August 28, with India opening their campaign against Thailand on August 30.
With the Asia Cup just around the corner, Rodrigues will first have to regain full fitness. But beyond that immediate concern, another opportunity to win a major title with India is already on the horizon.
