Forlan, who is best known for representing Uruguay from 2002-14 and clubs like Manchester United, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan, is one of the most important figures of his country’s football history. He comes to the setup after the team’s group stage finish in the FIFA World Cup, where the two-time champions failed to win a match, marking their worst performance in the tournament’s history.

A statement from the Uruguayan Football Association said, “The Uruguayan Football Association announces the return of Diego Forlan to the Uruguayan National Team. Forlan represented Uruguay in 112 matches, scoring 36 goals and capturing the Copa America 2011 with them and playing a crucial role in their fourth-place finish in the 2010 FIFA World Cup with five goals.

Forlan will begin working immediately with the under-20 team. There, he will lead a project aimed at developing young talent, supporting their growth, and strengthening their path to the senior national team. He will work with Santiago Espasandin and Diego Perez as assistant coaches, Marco Mansulino as physical trainer, Ignacio Bordad as goalkeeping coach, and Gabriel Skrilec as video analyst.

Former Mumbai and Goa all-rounder Amit Dani, who, on Wednesday was named coach of the West Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, beginning on August 23 in Bengaluru, believes the zonal competition is the perfect platform for opener Prithvi Shaw to chart his India comeback.

Former Mumbai opener Shaw, 26, who has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I, moved to Maharashtra last season, where he scored 537 runs in the Ranji Trophy.

“This is a huge opportunity for Prithvi to make a comeback in the national team, and I hope he can cash on it. He’s such an explosive batter. He needs to focus on performing consistently and help the team win matches. A good performance will benefit him individually as well as the West Zone team,” Dani told mid-day on Wednesday.

The Maharashtra batter Ruturaj Gaikwad-led West Zone will begin their Duleep Trophy campaign against North Zone in the quarter-final at Bengaluru on August 23.

Dani was Mumbai’s assistant coach when Shaw played a key role in helping the Shreyas Iyer-led Mumbai team win the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2018. He believes Shaw can do it again. “Vinayak Samant was the coach in 2018-19 and I was assisting. Prithvi was in that team and he batted really well [he scored 356 runs with the help of one century and three half-centuries] and helped us win the Vijay Hazare Trophy that year. So, I’m hoping Prithvi can repeat that performance this time,” added Dani, who considers this a crucial assignment for himself too.

“I have played the Deodhar Trophy [50-over games], but not Duleep Trophy [four-day games], so this is a great opportunity for me and also a challenging one. I believe this team is ready; our aim is to win the Duleep Trophy,” he said, adding that having six experienced Mumbai players — Shardul Thakur, Sarfaraz Khan, Tushar Deshpande, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian and Musheer Khan — within the team is a massive advantage.

જીત બાદ વ્યક્ત કરી ખુશી

Colombo [Sri Lanka], August 7 (ANI): Indian skipper Shubman Gill sustained an injury to his right ring finger during a practice session ahead of the first Sri Lanka Test scheduled from August 15 onwards.

The injury comes as a serious blow to India ahead of the Test series and is being monitored by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team. As a precautionary measure, he is missing Day 1 of the warm-up match against SLC XI taking place on Friday. KL Rahul is leading the team in his absence.

BCCI posted on X, “Update: Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India’s practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill’s absence."

SLC XI won the toss and opted to bat against India in this three-day warm-up game.

The two-match Test series will get underway with the opening game at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to 19, before the teams move to Colombo for the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club from August 23 to 27.

India’s ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the series as he has not fully recovered from the left knee injury he sustained during the ODI series against England.

The Men’s Selection Committee has included Aquib Nabi in the squad as Bumrah’s replacement.

India are also grappling with multiple injury concerns ahead of the series, with Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy sidelined due to hamstring and quadriceps injuries, respectively.

Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the opening Test with a hamstring issue, while Akash Deep remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from stress reactions in his back.

The series will form part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Led by Shubman Gill, India are currently fifth in the World Test Championship standings, having registered four wins and four losses in nine matches, with a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150.
