Premier League : réduit à dix, City fait tomber United à Old Trafford

Abhishek blitz powers India past Afghanistan
Opener Abhishek Sharma smashed 82 from just 32 balls as India hammered Afghanistan by seven wickets in the first T20 international in New Delhi on Sunday.
Chasing 157 for victory, India rode on Abhishek’s blitz, which included seven sixes and seven fours, to achieve the target in 13.4 overs and lead the three-match series 1-0.
Abhishek got his first runs with a six off Fazalhaq Farooqi in the opening over and there was no looking back for the swashbuckling left-handed batter.
He lost opening partner Sanju Samson for 10 but kept up the charge with a flurry of fours and sixes to raise his fifty off 22 balls.
Abhishek and Ishan Kishan, who made 42, put on 121 runs as the pair tore into the opposition attack to raise the noise of over 25,000 fans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
“The shots Abhishek played were flawless, exemplary,” said India captain Shreyas Iyer.
“Kishan has been in great form. He’s very relaxed, calm and knows his game.”
Abhishek fell to off-spinner Mohammad Nabi as Rashid Khan took a good catch in the deep.
Nabi soon sent back Kishan before Tilak Varma (3) and Iyer (8) saw the team home.
India’s left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh set up victory with figures of 3-19 in his four overs as he helped restrict Afghanistan to 156-8.
Put in to bat, Afghanistan slipped to 43-5 before Azmatullah Omarzai hit an unbeaten 64.
Returning pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah started with a wide down the leg side for five extras but struck on the second legal delivery to dismiss Rahmanullah Gurbaz, caught at first slip.
Iyer praised Bumrah, calling the pace spearhead, who returned to the team after an injury in the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 16, a “great asset”.
Skipper Ibrahim Zadran attempted to hit back with two fours but was soon run out for 11 after a mix up with Sediqullah Atal to give India the upper hand.
OTD: The day cricket’s spin king arrived
“I would say that run out was the turning point,” said Zadran. “Ishan Kishan grabbed the ball and threw it to the bowler. They got the momentum.”
Wickets kept tumbling as spinners Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy took one each as Afghanistan lost half their side in seven overs.
Omarzai, who survived a dropped catch on 39, and Nabi (33) then combined to rebuild the innings with a partnership of 83.
Arshdeep broke the stand as he bowled Nabi off a slower yorker.
Omarzai stuck around until the end as Afghanistan got 21 runs off the last over from Shivam Dube but it was not enough against the reigning T20 world champions.
Afghanistan, who have long used India and the United Arab Emirates as home venues, are the official hosts for the series.

Oldest Springbok Deon Fourie now eyes 2027 World Cup: ‘Why not?’
Deon Fourie’s return to the Springbok setup “sparked a fire” in him to keep playing for the national team.
If his body holds up and he can still compete next year, he hopes to play in the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
Drafted into the Bok squad after injuries, Fourie became the oldest-ever Springbok when he played against the All Blacks in their Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Test in Cape Town.
He also came off the bench in Soweto and Baltimore, where the Springboks beat the All Blacks 43-28 to wrap up the series 3-1.
That marked his 16th Test cap less than two weeks before his 40th birthday on 25 September.
Fourie out to prove people wrong
While head coach Rassie Erasmus described Fourie as their go-to man, someone they would “push the emergency button” for when needed, and scrum coach Daan Human called him one of the country’s top scrummagers, the veteran forward was excited about his potential future in the national setup.
“After the [2023] World Cup, I thought maybe I’ll play one or two more years,” Fourie said.
“But last year I was again invited to an alignment camp in Cape Town. That sparked a bit of fire in me to wear the green and gold again. But unfortunately, after that I broke my ankle.”
A string of injuries followed, including a career-threatening ACL, fractured tibia and torn bicep.
“The injuries piled up after that. To be honest, I didn’t think I’d wear the green and gold again. But I had a few good games at the end of the URC last year.
“My motivation was to get back onto the field and showcase that I still have rugby in me. All the criticism I get, usually from people out there, usually adds fuel to the fire for me, just to prove them wrong.”
Fourie turned in a strong performance for the Stormers during their hard-fought 38-21 defeat to the All Blacks last month. This earned him his long-awaited call-up.
He’s been used primarily as cover hooker for Malcolm Marx, though slotting in at flank when needed.
Disrupting birthday plans, targeting the World Cup
Decent performances may see him used in the one-off Test against the Wallabies in Perth two days after his birthday.
“My wife’s not too happy. She had plans a few months ago for my 40th. But that changed a bit,” Fourie chuckled.
“Luckily it’s an off-day because we’re only playing on the Sunday. I’m not sure yet what I’ll do. I have a few friends in Sydney who will probably fly over to Perth, maybe they can make it special for me.”
He said he’s taking it one game at a time but is still hopeful about next year’s World Cup.
“It’s still a long way away and a lot of games to be played before then. If the body holds up and I can still perform at the top level, why not?”
