Inzoi's director says he is 'very much focused on our core goals' as he announces a multiplayer roleplaying mode designed to be like Ready Player One

We all hoped that Inzoi would be the competitor to The Sims 4 that the life sim genre has needed for years. Thus far, though, things haven't quite panned out that way. Life sim expert Mollie Taylor described Inzoi's early access version as a "shallow imitation" of The Sims, while the game's own director Hyungjin "Kjun" Kim conceded that building a life sim has proven much harder than he anticipated.

Since then, Kim has spent the last year working on new features for InZoi, which I personally hope will result in a much richer simulation. But in his latest Steam update, Kim's focus was on something entirely different. Alongside the base game, Kim is apparently working on a whole new way to play called 'Canvastown'.

This essentially lets players roleplay as a single character in the town, rather than overseeing everyone's lives from a bird's-eye view. "The main goal of Canvastown is to get away from mundane daily life and capture memorable moments within life simulation so you can jump in and enjoy only those extraordinary moments", Kim explained. turconews.click

The mode will allow players to create their own Zoi and customise their house, before entering an dedicated online space called 'AR Company' that allows "around 50 people" to "converse and interact in the same channel under mutual consent." So it's essentially a mini online village populate by players, although Kim says that NPC Zois will appear in these spaces too. "Like a movie director, you can assign roles and cast your actors to create your scenario."

He adds that players will be able to further enhance their Canvastown through using "script mods" that will let players "create mini-game like car racing". Kim doesn't specify whether players will be able to create such script mods, but does state that he hopes these mini-games "can later be added to the main game as well".

Kim cites the movie Ready Player One as an example of the kind of experience he's trying to build, stating he wants players to be able to "step away from reality into this world of Inzoi where they can live out a different life."

It also sounds like it'll be a while before players will get their hands on it. "Looking at the current build makes me sigh. There are so many lacking areas, and we have a very long way to go." He also emphasises that Canvastown is a "side project" and that Inzoi Studio is "very much focused on our core goals."

It all sounds very ambitious, but I do wonder whether Kim is trying to run before he can walk. As he's stated in the past, making a standard, run-of-the-mill life simulation is not easy, and I wonder whether it may have been better to keep this side project under wraps until Inzoi had really nailed the fundamentals. This is doubly important considering that Inzoi now has some stiff competition in Paralives, which according to Mollie made a considerably stronger early access debut.

Rockstar wants GTA 6's Jason and Lucia to inspire the same sort of "emotional connection" that Red Dead Redemption 2 fans had with Arthur

Rockstar wants people to love GTA 6's Jason and Lucia just as much as they did with Red Dead Redemption 2 protagonist Arthur Morgan.

Red Dead Redemption 2's Arthur Morgan is one of the most beloved video game protagonists of all-time. Even as someone who did not completely love it as a game at times – I often describe it as the game I love that I hate the most – Arthur was a character that really stuck with me and remains one of my all-time favorites years later. And while Rockstar has done great characters in the past like Niko Bellic and John Marston, Arthur is on a whole other level.

So after a protagonist as acclaimed as Arthur, following up on that is likely a point of stress for the developers, and speaking to TroisCouleurs, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explains: "We wanted to take the depth that we were able to add into the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the ability to interact with the world in a much more significant way, but then also this sort of emotional connection that people end up having with Arthur."

Nelson continues: "We knew we wanted to come back and continue playing with the idea of multiple protagonists," and that, with a couple, the studio could make the protagonists' actions a bit more impactful than what we saw with GTA 5's trio. The interviewer cites moments shown, like Lucia and Jason getting ready to go out, with a level of intimacy between the characters, unlike the GTA 5 protagonists, who tolerated each other at best.

Nelson says these quieter moments are intentional, as they make the intense bits even more impactful, explaining, "when you see her get thrown down the stairs and then you switch to him, and you can’t hear her, it’s the feeling of concern."

Nelson adds, the quieter moments "were some of the most compelling aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2 and we wanted to see if we could bring some of those elements into GTA 6."

GTA 6 wasn't "fully formed" when Trailer 1 released, Rockstar boss says, but the Tom Petty song it used was a "mission statement" of where it was going

After more than 400 hours of Valheim in early access, I love the journey from naked adventurer to godly Viking now more than ever

Play This Right Now

Welcome to Play This Right Now, the site version of our weekly newsletter in which we celebrate a new game, update, or DLC that we think is well worth checking out. You can subscribe to the newsletter at the link if you want to get our thoughts about a new videogame happening direct to your inbox every Thursday.

I'm back on my bullshit, and by bullshit I mean sinking another delightful 100 hours into Valheim—the Viking-themed survival crafting game that sits among my top five most-played games on Steam. With the launch of 1.0 and its new biome, the Deep North, now is the best time to round up your friends and return to ye olde old sea fortresses and swampy castles. A lot has changed in Odin's purgatory.

Or even better, forget your old worlds and start anew. The Deep North's endgame is its biggest draw, sure, but from start to finish, Valheim is a much better experience with boss reworks, small UI tweaks, and a few new cutscenes for a lovely pinch of world-building. You don't get a good look at the big picture by booting up old saves, and after diving into Valheim 1.0 with nothing but a wooden club and tattered leather loincloth, I can confidently say I don't regret it one bit.

Perhaps some of that is thanks to skipping last year's Call to Arms update—the patch where Iron Gate dramatically reworked the buffs received from slaying Valheim's giant gods—but now I'm glad I waited. As my total Valheim playtime rapidly approaches the 500-hour mark, I can't help but be impressed by how good a handful of small changes and new items make progression to the endgame feel.

Some of those changes stood out as soon as I entered the cozy Meadows of Valheim's starting zone, and I guarantee any survival-crafting, base-building menace like myself will be just as thrilled as I was to see Iron Gate's reworked building UI. Instead of endlessly scrolling through a sea of furniture, walls, and decor, I can finally search for and favorite individual pieces as a shortcut or create entire categories dedicated to my go-to tools. It's the first time in years I've enjoyed Valheim without a slew of QoL building mods.

I've already made biome-specific building collections for every zone too, and even have pared-down versions for quick access in emergencies. We're all guilty of picking fights with Fulings that we can't handle, but I like to pull the ol' Fortnite on 'em. That's code for building a box around myself and crying for help, by the way. Is that not how Fortnite works?

First-time Vikings or lapsed players like myself will also appreciate Valheim's smooth transition from the early-game Meadows to the fiery end-times hellscape of the Ashlands. With all of its pieces in alignment, you don't need your nose in a wiki or a posse of seasoned friends to figure out the next steps of the adventure.

There's a clearer big-picture path to Valheim we just didn't have before, and I'm finally comfortable recommending it as a version-complete build without all of the early access caveats.

Valheim - A viking standing in the Mistlands holding a grappling hook

The boss reworks from last year pair especially well with the breadcrumb directions added in 1.0's cutscenes, too. I won't spoil the whole thing for you, but historically, Valheim didn't do the best job of teaching its Vikings how to play. And I mean, it still doesn't deliver its secrets on a silver platter, but that's more fun when you've got a vague hint about where to go next and a series of boss buffs that all feel viable. Back in my day, we had seven boss buffs, and only one (or maybe two) of them felt viable.

Iron Gate also heard us loud and clear on the stingy storage space and how miserable navigating the foggy marble cliffs of the Mistlands felt. The Deep North update comes with upgradeable pocket space and a nifty grappling hook for safely traversing one of Valheim's most hostile zones—or so I'm told. You may be surprised to learn I've mostly used these upgrades for holding more decorations and slingshotting my Viking between taller building projects. What goes on in the Mistlands is none of my business.

This is all before you get to the Deep North, mind you. There are still plenty of secrets hidden in Valheim's last chapter, but it would be a shame to remember the journey to that point only by its early access builds. So whether you're playing for the first time or a seasoned Viking, I vote you all start the same way: naked in the Meadows, wielding a stick.

You can check out Valheim 1.0—out now on Steam.
