For under $60, the Anbernic RG SP looks to be the retro handheld hero we need while portable prices spiral

I won't lie, I was expecting the Anbernic RG SP to land with an unsavoury, but the GBA SP clone is making big impressions with its pre-order price tag. While even the cheapest portables are taking a battering thanks to AI component demand, this clamshell is holding onto a sub-$60 MSRP that's actually lower than its predecessor. likesport.biz

It's safe to say there's really no shortage of GBA SP clones out there, so if you really cba waiting for the Anbernic RG SP, you could grab its RG35XXSP predecessor for around $55, or the RG34XX that looks more like the OG for $61 if you prefer the horizontal version from back in 2001.

I should caveat that the Anbernic RG SP is sitting slightly lower at $57.99 due to "early bird" discounts. Normally, the retro handheld will set you back $64.99, and that's if you order directly from Anbernic. Still, even that full MSRP is respectable since it matches the RG35XXSP from two years ago, and it demonstrates the portable maker is trying to keep prices steady.

Yes, we are talking about low handheld specs that, logically speaking, should be outside the RAMageddon blast zone, but that's sadly not how this works. Even the modest Super Pocket, Blaze's Evercade cart-wielding portable, fell folly to price hikes last month, and it comes armed with just 256MB of DDR RAM and a quad-core ARM chipset.

There are multiple layers to the AI-fuelled debacle surrounding component demand that's rooted in all production rather than specific parts, so no device is really safe. Therefore, it's worth commending Anbernic for keeping the RG SP under $60, as its rivals aren't faring quite as well

For instance, Ayaneo Pocket Advance pre-orders just landed, and I'm not opposed to its $89 price tag by any means; it will eventually jump up slightly higher to $109. The GBA clone is technically new, but it's pretty similar to the previously released Pocket Air Mini in terms of specs, and it landed for a lower introductory price. That would suggest there's something narrowing the margins that will lead to slight price increases, even if they are pretty small.

Ultimately, I think it's worth rooting for the handheld makers actively keeping prices sensible right now, and Anbernic is one of them. Yes, it does dabble with higher-end hardware, with the Anbernic RG Cube serving as an example of a more premium portable, but it seems to be making the right calls by focusing on its core affordable offerings that helped it ascend as a renowned brand in the first place.

Swing by the best retro consoles for emulation machines, authentic remakes, and more.

SOULM8TE

Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?

En film om en mordisk lovebot. Låter det fånigt? Ja.

Soulm8te släpptes digitalt i USA 1 augusti.

Pokemon artist behind iconic Gen 9 'mons also designed a Deltarune Chapter 5 character, though Toby Fox "made some modifications"

Toby Fox's Deltarune has a Pokemon connection: the RPG's recent Chapter 5 features a character designed by artist Hitoshi Ariga, who created painfully cute Ogerpon, among other fan-favorite pocket monsters. However, Fox edited Ariga's notably Grass-type idea before letting it loose in the game.

Fox explains in a new blog post sharing his "Chapter 5 thoughts" and elaborating on Deltarune's newest characters and mechanics, like the bouncy platforming system. He also shares more information about Chapter 5's Netskie enemies capable of assuming the approximate shape and grin of a tricky fox. Deltarune fans knew Ariga helped design the mischievous creatures since he appears in the game's credits as a guest character designer, but Fox elaborates on the extent.

The developer writes in his blog, "Hitoshi Ariga is a Japanese artist who's most well-known for drawing the manga Rockman Megamix and designing a number of Pokemon, including the recently beloved Sneasler, Flutter Mane, and Ogerpon. However, did you know that he also drew the character sprites for many classic games, including Illusion of Gaia?!"

A zoomed-in screenshot from Deltarune, showing Susie, Kris, and Ralsei posing with other characters.

Ariga is indeed an accomplished artist – the designer has been involved in a range of video games since the early '90s, with titles like the ARPG Illusion of Gaia, as Fox noted, and Streets of Rage 2 for the Sega Genesis. He's been creating Pokemon since Pokemon X and Y in 2013, developing fan-favorite monsters like Aegislash since Generation 6, though he's been a Pokemon Trading Card Game illustrator since 2011.

"Anyway, he drew a bit of a fox character," Fox continues, "and then I made some modifications to it for the game."

The character sketch Fox attaches looks more than a little different from Deltarune Chapter 5's actual Netskie enemies, which are rooted to the ground and take the shape of an orange fox with a spread of nine violet tails.

Ariga's original design is much more of a Grass-type baby than that; its body lacks detail other than a few straight lines of wood grain, which scratch out a pair of slitted eyes and a mouth, and its ears and tail are made up of springy green leaves. I think you can sense Ariga's history with Pokemon in his character art – his Netskie would get along well with Leafeon and Deerling and their elegant forested bodies.

But Fox seemed to think this version of a Netskie was better suited for a brighter universe, as Deltarune accommodates dull neon hauntings best.

Deltarune creator Toby Fox says "there are no more wacky silly adventures" as Chapter 6 will finally deal with the RPG's "main mysteries."
